What is the best treatment for box tree caterpillar?

Bacillus thuringiensis — Bt — is the best treatment, and it is not close. It is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that produces a protein toxic to caterpillars and to nothing else. Bees, hoverflies, ladybirds, birds, pets and children are unaffected, because the toxin only activates in the highly alkaline gut of a caterpillar.

In the UK, the Bt product gardeners buy is TOPBUXUS ABC. It is sold in 3 g sachets, five to a box, each treating 30 m² of box. I have used it on my own hedge every season since 2019, and the pattern is the same every time: feeding visibly stops within a day, and the caterpillars are dead within three to five.

What else do I need?

Two things, and they solve different problems. A pheromone trap tells you when — it catches male moths, which means a generation is on the wing and caterpillars are two to three weeks away. A Buxus feed handles after — a defoliated hedge has to rebuild leaf, and it cannot do that on depleted soil.

How the treatments compare

This is every option I have tried on my own plants, ranked by how reliably it worked rather than by how much it costs.

Do I need an electric sprayer?

Not strictly — but coverage is what makes or breaks a Bt spray, and coverage is physically hard. The caterpillars shelter deep inside the plant, so you have to hold a branch open with one hand and spray into the gap with the other. With a hand-pump sprayer you are also pumping, which means you have run out of hands, and in practice you stop spraying too early.

A powered sprayer keeps constant pressure so you can concentrate on getting the nozzle inside the plant. It is the difference between a treatment that works and one that you conclude 'didn't work'. If you have more than a few metres of hedge, size up to the 8 litre.

What about nematodes?

Nematodes are microscopic roundworms that hunt caterpillar larvae, and they are genuinely biological. They also need the foliage damp, the temperature between 12 and 25 °C, no UV, and application within days of delivery. Get all of that right and they work. Miss one and they do not.

What should I not buy?

• Broad-spectrum insecticides (cypermethrin, deltamethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin). They work, and they also kill bees, hoverflies, ladybirds and the parasitoid wasps that are slowly learning to eat box tree caterpillar. Bt is just as effective on the target and harmless to everything else, so there is no argument for reaching for these first.
• A trap instead of a spray. The most expensive mistake I see. A trap catches male moths and will not save a hedge on its own.
• Ultrasonic repellers, bug zappers and garlic sprays. No evidence of any effect on this pest.
• Anything sold as a 'box hedge tonic' with no stated active ingredient. If the listing will not tell you what is in it, it is not a treatment.

For blight as well as caterpillar

Box blight is a fungal disease, not an insect, and nothing above will touch it. If your leaves have brown spots and your stems have black streaks but there is no webbing and no frass, read blight vs caterpillar first — treating the wrong problem wastes a season.

What I would buy if I were starting today

One box of TOPBUXUS ABC and one pheromone trap, in February or early March, before the season starts and before everyone else buys them. Add the Buxus feed in April. Total outlay is less than the cost of replacing two metres of mature hedge, and it is the difference between a hedge you keep and a hedge you dig out.
