TOPBUXUS Health-Mix Review: Does It Stop Box Blight?

What is TOPBUXUS Health-Mix?

An effervescent tablet that dissolves in water to make a foliar feed. One tablet in 1 litre treats 10 m² of box. You spray it onto the foliage rather than watering it into the soil, so the nutrients are absorbed through the leaf and go to work within days rather than weeks.

The claim on the packaging is that it stops and prevents box blight. The mechanism is indirect: a well-fed box plant produces new growth faster than blight can strip it, and denser, healthier foliage is more resistant. That is not the same as killing the fungus, and it is worth being clear about the difference before you buy.

Is it a fungicide?

No, and it does not claim to be a registered one. If you have severe, established blight — black streaks running down the stems, leaf loss from the inside of the plant outwards — feeding alone will not turn it around. You need to prune out infected material, improve airflow, clear fallen leaves from the base, and stop overhead watering.

Health-Mix belongs in that programme rather than instead of it. Where I have seen it earn its place is on plants that have lost a lot of leaf, whether to blight or to caterpillar, and need to rebuild canopy quickly.

How do you use it?

1. Drop one tablet per litre of water

   It takes about ten minutes to dissolve fully, so mix before you go out rather than standing over the sprayer waiting. One tablet covers 10 m² of box.

2. Mix it with your Bt if caterpillars are active

   Health-Mix can be tank-mixed with a Bt product, so one pass treats the caterpillars and feeds the plant. This is the main practical advantage over a granular feed.

3. Spray the foliage until it is wet through

   Same technique as a caterpillar spray: get inside the plant, not just over the outer shell. The leaf surface is what absorbs it.

4. Repeat every four to six weeks through the growing season

   March to September. On a badly defoliated plant I do it monthly through the first recovery summer, then drop back.

What results should you expect?

On a stripped hedge, visible new growth roughly two to three weeks sooner than an untreated section, and better leaf colour. That is a real effect and worth having, but it is a nudge rather than a transformation — the plant does the work, this makes it slightly easier.

On blight specifically, I would describe the effect as holding ground. The plants I have fed have kept more leaf through a bad blight year than the ones I have not. What has actually turned blight around in my garden is airflow: thinning the hedge so it dries after rain.

Is it worth the money?

For a stripped or blighted hedge, yes — the cost is small against replacing mature box, and the tank-mixing means it costs you no extra time. For a healthy hedge with no problems, no. Buy the 10-tablet pack first. That is 100 m² of treatment, which is more than most domestic hedges need in a season, and it lets you find out whether you will actually keep up the routine before committing to the 40 or 100.

What about TOPBUXUS Carpet?

A decorative mulch that sits on the soil and stops rain splashing blight spores from the ground back up onto the lower leaves. Splash-borne reinfection is a genuine mechanism, so this is not snake oil — but it is a narrow fix, it only covers 5 m² per bag, and it does nothing at all against caterpillars.

Worth it if blight keeps recurring on the lower third of a hedge. Otherwise a layer of ordinary bark mulch does much the same job for less.
